ADULT COURSE

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Adult Amateur course is designed with the amateur or semi professional musician in mind who does not play music professionally but enjoys playing music in their spare time. Although there are no exam requirements to do this course, in order to achieve maximum benefit from the course we suggest that:
•You have complete fluency reading music and are reasonably comfortable sight reading.
•You have reached a reasonable level of proficiency in your instrument. If exams taken in the past you would put this on your form and if not give us some information which will give us an idea of your standard. This might include how many years you have been taking lessons, repertoire learned and general playing experience.
•You have some prior experience playing in either an orchestra or chamber group as for the majority of the course you will be playing in a group situation and would need to be sure of being comfortable with this.

The course involves chamber music, orchestra, Traditional Irish music, classes in style and technique and an introduction to improvisation and jazz. The trad and jazz will be mainly learned by ear but no prior experience of this is necessary. It will be taken at a pace suitable for everyone.
Please note that this group will have the widest range of age and ability. As with the other courses our aim is to have an environment where students are challenged and learn as much as possible, yet are comfortable enough to enjoy every aspect of the course and have fun.

ADULT COURSE FOR PRIMARY TEACHERS

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed specifically for primary school teachers with a particular interest in music and is EPV approved.
*Under Rule 58 of the Rules for National Schools, teachers are entitled to Extra Personal Vacation (EPV) on foot of attending approved summer courses Similar to the adult course, it is suitable for amateur musicians who are keen to play music with like minded people while at the same time linking these skills in with practical methods of passing on an understanding and appreciation of music in the classroom.

As this is a strings course, it would ideally suit a teacher with some experience in playing a stringed instrument such as a violin, viola, cello or bass. But if you play a non stringed instrument and would still like to participate, or indeed if you do not play an instrument but have a keen interest in music and want to learn more about ideas for incorporating it into class teaching, you might like to participate in the non playing elements of the course while listening in on the others. Please call or email (contact details on home page)and we will discuss how we might accommodate you.

The course involves chamber music, traditional Irish music, jazz and improvisation and in addition to this will involve a module with Sr Karol O’Connell on her ‘Music is Fun’ series of books. This is a critically acclaimed method Sr Karol has devised for teaching music in the classroom based on the Kodály method.

In addition to this, participants in this course will be observing and at times assisting tutors Diane Daly and Boris Hunka (experienced musicians and teachers experienced in methods of teaching music such as Dalcroze) throughout the week as they work with the junior group children put together their music and drama items. The junior group children are aged 6 – 12

The different strands of the course aim to expose participants to a wide range of musical ideas. These are designed to help them grow as musicians themselves and to show them methods to help the children they will be teaching to understand music better.

To expose children to music is an end in itself, as it stimulates the imagination and encourages them to express and empathise with emotions. As well as this, it has been shown to indirectly affect in a positive way, other subjects involving numeracy, literacy, discipline and organisation skills.
These transferable skills covered through various aspects of the course include rhythm, pitch, counting, improvisation, memory, musical notation, sequences, collaborating in a group towards a common goal and performance techniques and skills.
