Ceol Na Mara Junior

JUNIOR COURSE
The junior course is suited to children from the age of 6 to approximately 9 who have been learning a stringed instrument for a minimum of one year (either classical or traditional). Fluency in reading music is not essential.

The course will include:
The main aim for the Junior course is to bring out each child’s creativity through music. As part of this they will be learning the many different ways music can be approached. Through listening, learning by ear and improvising. through creating a drama, playing together in orchestra and Irish traditional music.
Each year we chose a theme and build a drama around it. The children help to create a complete production themselves by contributing their own ideas for a storyline as well as using their instruments for the musical sections. They will write a song and put it all together to create a whole performance. Every year is very different as the end result is dependent on the kids themselves and the energy the bring to the group. It is always a lot of fun.

Venue: Kylemore Abbey
Start date: Sunday 24th
Sunday class times will be 2pm – 3:30pm
Monday – Friday 9:30 – 12pm (which will include a 15 minute break half way through, children are asked to bring a snack and drink with them)
On the final day, Friday 29th July there will be a lunchtime concert involving the juniors drama and their various musical items.
Then at 6:30pm (exact time tbc) we will have the final concert in which the chamber groups, jazz, trad and orchestra items from the other courses taking part will perform.
Junior plus with orchestra participants will be playing in this concert also as part of some of the orchestra items.
All are welcome to attend both concerts.

JUNIOR PLUS
Junior Plus is an extension of the Junior course and is suited to children aged 9 -12 who have achieved approximately grade 3 level in ABRSM, RIAM equivalent examining body. If no exam taken yet, if the child, in the opinion of their teacher, plays at this level and has the concentration and reading skills to take part, this is perfectly fine.
It is a more challenging course which as well as including all the activities from the Junior course, will include an additional chamber music class each day. Students should be comfortable with sight reading as they will be working through a larger amount of music during the week. The levels will be assessed on the first day from trying them in groups based on age and standard and each child will be assigned a suitable group for their abilities.
