Ceol Na Mara Junior – €250
The junior course is suited to children from the age of 6 to approximately 9 who have been learning a stringed instrument for a minimum of one year (either classical or traditional). Fluency in reading music is not essential.
The main aim of the Junior course is to bring out each child’s creativity through music. As part of this they will be learning the many different ways music can be approached. Through listening, learning by ear and improvising. By creating a drama, playing together in groups with varying styles of music from classical to Irish traditional music with a little jazz, pop and rap thrown in.
Each year we chose a theme and build a drama around it. The children help to create a complete production themselves by contributing their own ideas for a storyline as well as using their instruments for the musical sections. Every year is very different as the end result is dependent on the kids themselves and the energy the bring to the group. It is always a lot of fun.
A wonderful extra element to the course is choir. This is taken by Sr. Karol O’Connell. Sr. Karol is a sister in the Benedictine community in Kylemore and is a highly acclaimed musician in her own right. Her ‘Music is Fun’ method is a series of books she has devised for teaching music in the classroom based on the Kodály method. She has years of experience working with children and recently featured in the film currently on general release ‘Making the Grade’ about the RIAM exams. They will have a short class with Sr. Karol every day which will give them a wonderfully uplifting perspective on how to use their voice.
