Senior Course – €350

The Senior course is suited for students of secondary school age. (12 – 18)

Students participating in this course would be expected to have been learning for a number of years, have good reading skills perhaps taken some exams (ABRSM or RIAM although this is not essential)

The course includes orchestra, chamber music, traditional Irish music and jazz and improvisation.

The chamber groups will be put together initially from the application forms based on age, grade of exams taken (if listed) and previous experience of chamber ensemble playing.

These will not be completely finalised until the course gets underway. Each group will be assigned to a chamber group then and will work on music suited to their level which will aim to challenge them but that will be within their capability.
The traditional music classes are done as a larger group and the tunes are learnt by ear. Sometimes students find it helpful to record the tunes to help learn them or notate them but learning by ear is encouraged in this class. (If anyone has another trad friendly instrument please feel free to bring it along for these sessions). The improvisation, song writing, jazz element of the course will be taken by Boris Hunka. The idea of these classes is to broaden even further the musical scope of the students and to encourage experimentation with their instruments and develop rhythmic and melodic skills outside of the classical genre. What they end up doing will depend on the group dynamic and the input from the participants.

Orchestra will cover a variety of orchestral styles and for certain pieces the senior group will be augmented by participants on the adult and Intermediate course.

*Please be aware that seating in orchestra may rotate or be changed as the week progresses at the tutor’s discretion. Also personnel in the chamber groups, pieces of music and parts assigned may be altered. The tutors decisions are final on all these matters.

Cost: €350
Venue: Letterfrack College
Start date/time: Sunday 2pm – 5:30
Monday – Thursday 9:30 – 3:15 which will include a 15 minute break at 10:45 and a lunch break from 12- 12:40
On Friday we will finish at the earlier time of 12pm. At 12:30 there will be a short concert involving the junior group drama and musical items which the other groups are welcome to attend.

Then at 6:30pm we will have the second concert involving the Intermediate, Senior and Adult groups. This concert will include certain items from the chamber music, trad, and orchestral pieces that have been worked on during the week.

All participants will play a piece as part of a chamber group, and will also perform in the orchestra and the Trad group.  (If anything has been worked on in the improvisation/jazz category that is suitable it will also be played but this class is predominantly experimental to explore different genres and push the students outside their comfort zone so there is no agenda to have something ready for performance in this particular class.)
